Environmental Policy Statement
As a producer and packer of fresh potatoes, vegetables, and daffodils, we at Puffin Produce Ltd recognise that the delivery of our operations can inevitably impact the environment in different ways.
We are therefore committed to: –
- Continuous monitoring, measuring and improving our performance, minimising our impact on the surrounding environment.
- Ensure that Puffin Produce Ltd complies with local and national environmental legislation and regulations.
- Meet our commitment to Science Based Target initiative, to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 46% by 2030 from a 2019 base year, and to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by at least 90% by 2040 from a 2019 baseline year.
- As a signatory of the Courtauld 2030 commitment we endeavor to cut waste and the intensity of greenhouse emissions associated with food by 50% by 2030 (using 2015 as a baseline). We will do this by working with our dedicated growers through efficiency drives, varietal and crop nutrition selection.
- We have committed to the Courtauld 2030 Water Roadmap, by doing so we have dedicated our efforts to producing and resourcing our raw material from areas of sustainable water management, to help deliver UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 and contribute to Net Zero through the implementation of Nature- based solutions.
- Comply with internal procedures considering: waste (creation of and disposal), raw materials (sourcing), water (usage), energy (consumption), biodiversity as well as the prevention and control of pollution.
- Keep up to date with new innovations in the industry to allow our business to optimise business efficiency.
- We have committed to ensuring sustainable supply, by only purchasing products from Red Tractor Assured and LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) Marque certified producers. This environmental accreditation ensures that our raw material is purchased from farms that are striving for environmental excellence.
Following a review of our current environmental performance and based on the nature of our operations, the key focus areas will be: –
- (Site) Carbon emissions – Other opportunities include investment in renewable energy, refrigeration gases with a lower GWP, investigate cold chain loss, invest in and increase the use of electric vehicles on site and implementing EV charging points at office and factory facilities.
- (Farming) Carbon emissions – Work collaboratively with our Grower base to implement practices outlined in the Puffin ‘Sustainable Spuds Scheme’ to help reduce on farm emissions. Practices include optimising field management, building soil organic matter, optimising nutrient management and creating additional biodiversity habitats.
- Waste – To continue to measure and monitor waste on site through segregated systems, to encourage best practice using the waste management hierarchy for all our operations. To reduce, reuse and recycle, in this order of priority.
- Energy – To investigate opportunities to become more energy efficient through measuring and monitoring consumption closely and options.
- To implement our company wide sustainability strategy which includes ‘Environmental Excellence’ as a key pillar.
- Water – To develop and map a supply chain risk assessment. Using this information and the WWF water framework we will develop and implement a business wide sustainable water management plan.
- Biodiversity – To build and improve habitats where possible, using cover crops headland mixes, farmland bird feeders, bird boxes, hibernaculums and hedgerow management. We are also committed to monitoring and measuring wildlife levels on farm to guide practice to help promote and encourage species development.
- We commit to working collaboratively with stakeholders outside of our business to improve and enrich our surrounding landscape. Continue work on the creation and development of a West Wales LEN’s (Landscape Enterprise Network) to work collectively with other stakeholders in the Eastern and Western Cleddau to implement effective nature-based solutions.
- Performance and targets will be reviewed annually, thus allowing us to create a structured approach to achieve our ambitious climate targets and commitments. We will continuously strive to improve our environmental performance and enrich our supporting landscape as our business continues to grow.
