St. David’s and Fishguard food support hub has received a donation of Blas y Tir cauliflower, leeks and potatoes from fresh produce company Puffin Produce Ltd, amid the Covid-19 crisis.

The Hub started as a small food pod in St. David’s last year, and has since been scaled up in response to the Covid-19 crisis to provide food support for vulnerable local residents, operating from St David’s though to Fishguard.

Ex Game of Thrones star Jerome Flynn, who lives near St. David’s and is heavily involved in the local community, discovered that some families and vulnerable individuals needed urgent help and so brought the existing support groups together across the peninsula – and launched the new collaborative initiative St David’s and Fishguard Food Hub, which runs from St David’s Memorial Town Hall.

One of the founding members and key organiser of the Food Hub, Louise Tarbuck, explained that they needed help to scale the operation up and Jerome was instrumental in helping put Puffin Produce in touch with the food hub.

Louise said of the donations from Puffin, “The fresh produce is actually the thing that lights up people’s faces. One thing we get over and over is they didn’t know how much kindness there was in the community – and at Puffin you’re very much a part of that community too.”

Puffin Produce will be providing weekly donations of fresh Blas y Tir leeks, cauliflower and potatoes to the food hub in St. David’s.

John Addams-Williams, Head of Field Services at Puffin Produce says, “We know these are challenging times for everyone. It’s a great feeling to know that we have brightened someone’s day with our produce and help our local community, which is why we try to help as much as we can.”

Louise adds, “The St David’s food pod has a simple system that anyone who asks for help will be given it. We can provide parcels to collect or for them to be delivered to your doorsteps by the Befriender volunteers. We hope that everyone feels included – and that means anyone can ask for help. There are no questions asked. We can and will help however we can. “
